India and Maldives to work on mutually beneficial partnership: MEA

Male, June 8 : India and Maldives will work on mutually beneficial partnership and expand the ties across multiple sectors, MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar said on Saturday.

"Mutually beneficial partnership. Warm discussions marked the meeting between PM Narendra Modi & President of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Focus on further deepening our special relationship by expanding cooperation across sectors," he tweeted after two sides held bilateral talks.Prime Minister Modi arrived here on first overseas visit after winning the recent elections.

Mr Modi on his maiden overseas visit to Maldives after elections on Saturday presented a cricket bat to the Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih."Connected by cricket. My friend, President Solih is an ardent cricket fan, so I presented him a cricket bat that has been signed by Team India playing at the Cricket World Cup 2019," Prime
Minister tweeted.

"Reached the Republic of Maldives. This visit indicates the importance India attaches to strong ties with the Republic of Maldives and the desire to boost cooperation in various spheres," Mr Modi tweeted.

Earlier in the day, Maldives President Solih announced conferring of highest honour accorded to foreign dignitaries, 'The Most Honourable Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen', on Mr Modi. (UNI)
