Agency News

Naypyitaw, May 29: ASEAN and Myanmar have agreed to initiate practical measures to ease tensions in Rakhine State, according to the Union Enterprise for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development in Rakhine (UEHRD).

U Toe Oung, adviser to the agency’s chair, said the measures would be implemented as soon as possible, depending on the situation on the ground, Myanmar Times reported. "We hope to begin the practical measures quickly," he said, without providing any details.

Senior officials of ASEAN, key ministries and Rakhine State met on Monday in Nay Pyi Taw. The two sides agreed to implement high-impact projects that would immediately benefit communities, and a capacity-building programme for the ASEAN-Emergency Response and Assessment Team based in Myanmar to support the repatriation of refugees.

According to the ASEAN secretariat, ASEAN and Myanmar discussed the recommendations of the Preliminary Needs Assessment and the plan for the Comprehensive Needs Assessment to facilitate the repatriation in Rakhine.
