Tokyo, May 15 : An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 struck off the north-east coast of Japan's southern Amami-Oshima Island, the weather agency here said Wednesday.
No tsunami warning or advisory has been issued as a result of the offshore quake, it said,
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor struck at 0234 hrs (local time), at a latitude of 29.7 degrees north and longitude of 130.7 degrees east. The quake occurred at a depth of 30 km, the JMA said.
The quake registered three on Japan's seismic scale which peaks at seven, the weather agency said, and was felt in areas in Kagoshima Prefecture.
There have been no immediate reports of injury as a result of the temblor, according to local authorities. (UNI)
