With the famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris severely damaged in a fire that has now been put out, people have come forward and pledged millions to help restore this iconic cathedral. Notably French business tycoon Francois Henri Pinault and his father Francois, have said they will contribute more than 100 million Euros for the Cathedral’s restoration work.
Fire blazed through the roof of the hundreds of years old building on Monday evening and the Cathedral’s wooden spire came crashing down. Paris watched in horror as one of its most loved buildings was being razed. 500 fire fighters arrived at the spot to douse the flames. One firefighter was reportedly injured. To the relief of the Parisians a great part of the building was saved. The city’s Fire Force Chief said the fire had been controlled and the stone façade of the building was ‘saved’ thanks to the efforts of the fire fighters.
A tycoon has promised 200 million Euros to help restore the cathedral. President Emmanuel Macron has said that Notre Dame Cathedral will be rebuilt and that he will ‘look beyond our borders’ for help. He invited the world to work together to rebuild the 800 year old structure.
Some high profile pledges have been made. French billionaires Francois Henri Pinault and his father said they would be giving more than 100 million Euros for the ‘complete reconstruction’ of what was lost. Francois Henri is the CEO of the Kering group that owns Yves St Laurent and Gucci fashion brands. He is married to actress Salma Hayek.
