Islamabad, Mar 26 : Pakistan Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for six weeks on medical grounds and also ordered his release.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Asif Saeed Khosa accepted the bail plea made by Sharif, geo news reported. Sharif is serving a seven-year prison sentence awarded to him by an accountability court in the Al Azizia corruption case. The former premier had filed a bail plea in the IHC on medical grounds but it was turned down last month, as the high court noted that "none of the reports [about Sharif's condition] suggest that continued incarceration of the petitioner, in any way, would be detrimental to his life".
Announcing the short verdict, Justice Khosa directed the former premier be granted bail for six weeks to get medical treatment within Pakistan. Nawaz will not be allowed to leave the country, the chief justice said. The former premier has been directed to submit bail bonds amounting to Rs10 million.
As both sides concluded their arguments, the Chief Justice held consultation with the other judges and wrote down the judgment. UNI
