Brussels, Mar 4 : A record 995 peaceful demonstrations were held in the center of Brussels in 2018, which is almost twice as many as there were in 2010, Brussels City Mayor Philippe Close said on Monday.
"All people come here for demonstrations, because European institutions, international media are located in Brussels ... However, 80 per cent of these protests have no connection with Belgium," Close told reporters.
A representative of the local police, in turn, said that a significant number of requests to carry out demonstrations in Brussels were related to the human rights situations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Venezuela and Turkey.
The police representative also pointed out that Brussels authorities very rarely denied these requests — just three or four times a year. (SPUTNIK)
