Tehran, Feb 26 : Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif on Monday announced his resignation on his Instagram page. The minister also apologised for his inability to continue in his post.
Zarif in a post in his Instagram account thanked the Iranian nation for 67 months of support, and said “Many thanks for the generosity of the dear and brave people of Iran and its authorities over the past 67 months. I sincerely apologize for the inability to continue the service and for all the shortcomings during the service. Be happy and worthy", Zarif wrote in his Instagram blog, Mehr news agency reported.
Deputy Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Moussavi also confirmed the report in a later interview with the Islamic republic news agency.
Yet, it is not clear if President Hassan Rouhani has endorsed the resignation of Zarif, the most favourite man in his cabinet.
A Ph.D holder in international law and policy from the University of Denver, Zarif played a prominent role in negotiating the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and major international powers - which US President Donald Trump withdrew from last year.
Zarif was appointed as a foreign minister in 2013. He had served as Iran's representative at the United Nations from 2002 to 2007. (UNI)
