Dhaka fire: Bangladesh President, PM express deep shock


Dhaka, Feb 21: Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Dr Shrin Shermin Chaudhury and former president Earshad have expressed their deep shock over the Chawkbazar fire.

They also conveyed their condolences to those affected. The prime minister stated this to the media during the morning procession at the Shaheed Minar. The president called for everyone to extend their support to the families of those killed by, or injured in, the fire.

Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader said the government will stand beside the victims of the fire and do everything it can to help them recover.

Till now, at least 70 people have been killed in a massive fire that engulfed several multi-storey buildings at Nanda Kumar Lane in Chawkbazar’s Churihatta area of Old Dhaka Wednesday on night.

Former president and Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad has expressed his deep shock over the deaths caused by a massive fire in Chawkbazar’s Churihatta area of Old Dhaka.

The opposition leader of 11th parliament expressed his condolences to the victims’ family members in a statement issued.

Ershad also called upon the officials concerned to take the necessary measures to treat the injured victims and offer compensation to the victims’ relatives.

In the statement, the Jatiya Party chairman urged the government to determine the cause of this massive disaster, and bring those responsible to trial if tangible evidence of negligence is found.

He demanded that fire-fighting systems and equipment be modernized to tackle such disasters in the future.UNI
