Nepal to import 160,000 roses from India for Valentine’s Day

Agency News

Kathmandu, Feb 9 : Nepal is importing 160,000 rose stems worth NPR 15 million in view of the Valentine’s Day.

According to the Floriculture Association Nepal (FAN), out of the 200,000 stems to be sold on the day, 160,000 are being imported from India.

The Himalayan republic imported roses worth NPR 12.5 million in 2018.

FAN President Kumar Kasajoo Shrestha told local media that the price of roses is going to be higher this year as the flower’s prices have gone up in the international market.

According to Shrestha, domestic production meets 20 per cent of the demand.

Interestingly, Kathmandu Valley alone consumes over 60 percent of the imported roses.

Last year, roses were priced in the range of NPR 40-80, and the price is expected to go up to NPR 50-100 this year, showing an 15 percent year-on-year rise.(UNI)
