Mexico City, Jan 26 : Around 150 people still remain missing after the dam collapse in the southwestern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, the state's authorities said in a statement.
On Friday, the dam collapsed in Minas Gerais causing heavy mood floods that hit the Brumadinho municipality. According to media reports, 50 people were killed by the disaster, while the state's authorities said that the death toll amounts to nine people.
"According to the data, presented by the Vale company [dam's owner], 427 people were at the disaster-hit area [at the moment of collapse] and 279 have been found alive," the statement said on late Friday. About 2,000 people remain without electricity in the area hit by the disaster. About 100 firefighters and dozens helicopters are involved in a search and rescue operation, according to the state's authorities.
A number of Latin American states, including Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Venezuela, have expressed condolences to Brazil over the incident.SPUTNIK
