Former leader of Taiwan’s Ruling DPP Party appointed new Prime Minister

Beijing, Jan 11 : Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen on Friday appointed former head of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Su Tseng-chang as Taiwan's new prime minister following the resignation of his predecessor, local media reported.

Su has replaced William Lai, who announced on Thursday his plans to resign the next day with his cabinet following the party's devastating defeat at local elections in November, when it secured mandates in just six out of 22 local jurisdiction areas, reported Sputnik.

Su already served as the Taiwanese prime minister between 2006 and 2007, before taking over the Democratic Progressive Party in 2012 and leading it until 2014.

Lai initially announced his decision to step down soon after the electoral defeat; however, Tsai -who herself resigned as the chair of the DPP- refused to accept his resignation at the time. UNI
