Tripoli, Dec 6: At least 12 people were killed when a rubber boat capsized off Misrata, Libya, the UN migration agency has said.
While three passengers from the boat, which spent more than ten days at the sea, remain missing, ten others were rescued and returned to Libya where they were treated by medical staff from the International Organisation for Migration.
"The survivors were all suffering from complete dehydration and exhaustion after being stranded at sea for days," reports quoted IOM physician Mohamed Abughalia as saying.
Four people in need of emergency medical care were transferred to a private hospital in Tripoli, IOM said. Six others were moved to detention centres run by Libyan authorities.
"We continue to advocate for alternatives to detention for migrants returned to Libyan shores, specifically for those most vulnerable," said IOM Libya Chief of Mission Othman Belbeisi. (UNI)
