Car carrying migrants crashes in Greece, eleven people killed

Athens, Oct 14: Eleven people have died in Northern Greece after a smuggler’s vehicle carrying illegal migrants collided with a truck and caught fire.

Ten of the victims were believed to be migrants who crossed into the Greece from Turkey. The 11th person was the car's driver and a suspected migrant smuggler, the police said on Saturday. The report published in Hürriyet Daily News said that the Firefighters have managed to recover 11 bodies from the car.

The truck driver survived the crash and managed to escape the fire without any serious injuries. In recent times, the attempts to smuggle migrants into Europe are becoming riskier as authorities have clamp down on smugglers.

Earlier in June also, a van smuggling 16 migrants, mostly from Iran and Syria, crashed in Northern Greece. Six people died in the crash which included three children.Greece has been one of the migrant crisis hotspots in Europe, with hundreds of thousands of migrants arriving since 2015.

The ongoing flow of the migrants into the country has forced the Greek government to take strict measures to reduce the number of migrants in Greek after the complaints from the locals. The Migration Ministery had pledged earlier this year to cut from the current level of 15,500 to 6,500 migrants on the islands.UNI
