Turkish court orders release of US pastor Brunson

Ankara, Oct 13: A Turkish court has decided to release American pastor Andrew Brunson, whose detention for the past two years has sparked a crisis in bilateral ties and also a crash in the Turkish currency lira.

The court in western Izmir convicted Brunson on terror-related charges and sentenced him to three years, one month and 15 days in jail. The court also lifted his travel ban in the fourth hearing, Andrew Brunson along with his wife, Norine Brunson and US Charge d'affaires Jeffrey Hovenier were present, Xinhua reported.

Four witnesses have retracted statements that had linked Brunson to terrorist groups, paving the way for prosecutors to request to lift his house arrest.

His lawyer Ismail Cem Halavut told reporters that his client was now free after the removal of his electronic bracelet and would leave Turkey soon for his country. UNI
