Jalalabad, Oct 2: At least 68 people were killed and 165 injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up at the highway between Jalalabad, the provincial capital of Nangarhar, and a prime Pakistan border.
A provincial governor's spokesman confirmed the toll in a statement. Many demonstrators had blocked the highway over the appointment of a local police chief, when the suicide bomber carried out the attack.
So far, there have been no claims of responsibility by any group. The attack comes at a time when the campaigning for the parliamentary elections, which are to take place on October 20, has already started.
Scores of demonstrators had blocked the highway between the provincial capital Jalalabad and a key border crossing with Pakistan when the bomber struck.
The protesters had come from Achin district to demand the removal of a local police commander. The attack was one of the worst in Afghanistan for months but security officials have warned that similar attacks are likely if crowds gather for campaign rallies ahead of parliamentary elections in October.UNI
