The Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi kicked off the second leg of his visit to Oman Today and is scheduled to meet Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the man who once studied in India and was a student of Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma who went on to become President.
Interestingly, Sultan Qaboos’s father was an alumnus of Ajmer’s Mayo College. He later sent his son to study in Pune for some time, where he was Dr. Sharma’s student. He completed a part of his early education from a private institution in Pune.
During his meeting, Mr. Modi is expected to tap into this personal connect of the Sultan. They are expected to identify new areas of cooperation and exchange views on the regional situation in South Asia and West Asia regions, including the Gulf, along with global issues of mutual interest. An Indian diplomat was quoted as saying that Qaboos has very fond memories from his student days. And that is the reason he has been very generous towards the Indian community and India’s requests for help.
Mr. Modi is also scheduled to visit a 250-year-old Shiva temple in Muscat.. While earlier in the day he officially launched the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the first Hindu temple in the capital of the UAE, home to over three million people of Indian origin. For which he also thanked the Crown Prince and said, 'I thank the Gulf countries which provided almost 30 Lakh people from India a home like environment, away from home, here.'
