Shimla, Feb 14 : The Congress on Friday accused the Narendra Modi led-Central government of attempting to do away with the reservation by misinterpreting the provision. Addressing a press conference at the party state office Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan here, Congress In-Charge for Himachal Pradesh Rajani Patil and All India Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev said, 'The party will not tolerate such systematic attack on the Indian Constitution by doing away with the provision of reservation meant for the people, belonging to the Schedule Caste and the Schedule Tribe. 'BJP mentor and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and second RSS leader Manmohan Vadiya have given statements to end the reservation,' the Congress leader said, adding that the Uttarakhand BJP government has contended before the Supreme Court that reservation is not a fundamental right.
Ms Patil warned the Modi government, RSS and BJP that Congress would not allow any attempt to tinker with the Constitution, at any cost. The Congress leaders challenged the Modi government and BJP to publicly clear their stand that it was against the affirmative action and should come up with a Bill in Parliament, regarding the same.
Seeking to clear the stand on reservation, the Congress leaders charged the BJP and Modi Government for playing politics by adopting double standard on the issue. They said that reservation was being provided under Articles 14/4 and 16/4 of the Constitution. The leaders further charged the Centre of misleading the Parliament on the issue, when the Congress raised this issue, during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha. 'BJP government gave wrong reply of this question by stating that there was Congress rule in Uttarakhand, when the state government submitted this statement in the Supreme Court," they alleged.
Congress would bring in a Privilege Motion on the issue against the concerned Minister for giving misleading information in the House, to counter the issue, they said, adding that that Congress will do it's duty as Opposition by raising this issue in Parliament. Ms Dev said the issue was turned down by the Uttarakhand High Court, but upheld by the Allahabad High Court.
The Congress leader said the Union Government had challenged the Uttarakhand government's contention in the apex court by stating that reservation was not a fundamental right, but a law enacted to help the weaker sections of the society. Modi government is running away from the issue by stating nothing on the stand of Uttarakhand on reservation issue, they charged.
Congress would expose the real character of BJP by bringing this issue in the public domain, they added. (UNI)
