Shimla, Sep 7 : Asian championships silver medallist Ashish Kumar (75 kg) and local favourite will be among the star attraction during the 4th Elite Men's National Boxing Championship which kicks off here from October 4-10.
Himachal Youth Services and Sports Minister Govind Singh Thakur while addressing Himachal Pradesh Boxing Association meeting here on Saturday said, that Olympic, Asian Games and world class boxers are likely to attend the week-long championship.
The Sports Minister said, after a tough bidding from other states it was Himachal who won the bid and will be hosting the event and will put in its best efforts to make the tournament a grand success this time also as it had earlier hosted the event 5 times.
The minister further laid stress that his government was making best efforts to promote sports in the state.
Secretary General HPBA SK Shandil said that about 300 boxers from 38 teams of various states would participate during this championship. The secretary general informed that two boxing rings would be set up and there would be three sessions in morning, afternoon and evening.
HPBA president Rajesh Bhandari said teams from Railways, Services (Army, Navy & Air force), Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Manipur, Aasam, Delhi, Punjab, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa and Andhra Pradesh had confirmed their participation.
Defending champion Services and runners-up Railways and Haryana will be the teams vying for top spot during the championship.
Local lad Ashish is currently ranked number one in Middleweight class and will also becompeting for the top honour.
