Agency News

Hamirpur (HP), Aug 19 : Two teachers and a student of the lower Hareta school were rescued on Monday when they were being swept away by gushing water while crossing a 'khad' to reach their school.

Those rescued by police and locals were identified as Anurag, Sunil Sharma and Pavan Kumar. They are undergoing treatment at the Galore hospital and were recovering. Meanwhile, traffic between Dharamshala-Shimla via Hamirpur has been snapped due to heavy rains in the region since morning. The disruption has been caused due to damage to the bridge near Mair village of the district and road traffic from Dharamshala to Shimla has been diverted via Bhota-Patta and Ukhli.

According to DSP Renu Sharma, police personnel had been posted on both sides of the road near Ukhli and Bhota to guide the people to take the alternate route. Breach in the road was noticed in the morning hours when it was raining heavily, following which the traffic was immediately halted.

The district received heavy rainfall during the morning hours paralysing the normal life. The worst sufferers were the school and college students walking up to their institutions.

The district recorded 32mm rain during the last twenty four hours with Mahre getting maximum 74mm rain followed by Hamirpur town 32mm. The MET has forecast more rain in the region in the coming 24 hours despite sunshine in patches on Monday afternoon.  (UNI)
