Shimla, Jul 28 : Three pilgrims, including two from Delhi and one from Shimla died while returning from Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra peak in the Anni sub-division of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, Anni Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Chet Singh said on Sunday.
The pilgrims were identified as Upender Saini, a resident of Khalini in Shimla district, Keval Ram and Aatma Ram, both hailing from Delhi. According to the SDM, they apparently died due to extreme cold. However, the cause of their death would be ascertained after the post-mortem examination report, he said.
Considering the tough terrain, it would take one or two days to bring the bodies down to the base camp, the SDM further said. The bodies would be handed over to victims families after the post-mortem, he added. The 35-kilometre trekking to Shrikhand Mahadev begins from Nirmand, Kullu.
Though the district administration sets up rescue posts with police personnel, doctors and paramedical staff, for the convenience of pilgrims, many casualties were reported every year.
The adverse climatic conditions and high-altitude pose a threat to the devotees but despite the hardships, hundreds of pilgrims pay obeisance to Lord Shiva. (UNI)
