Higher reaches encounters heavy snowfall in HP

Shimla, Dec 27: Higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh including Manali and Kalpa received heavy snowfall and extreme cold waves as Mercury plunged to four to five degrees below normal.

Tourist resorts recorded two to five centimeter of snowfall on Wednesday night, pushing down night temperature to minus 9.3 degrees and minus eight degrees in Manali and Kalpa respectively.

Minimum temperature of Kalpa was 4.8 degrees below normal and Keylong 1.3 degrees. High reaches of Kullu, Lahaul, Spiti and Kinnaur also had light to moderate snowfall.

Minimum temperature of the capital town and Manali was lowest of this season as Met office recorded Shimla at minus 0.6 degrees and minus five degrees.

Similarly tourist resort Dalhousie was recorded low at minus 1.4 degrees and Kufri at minus one.

Sundernagar in Mandi, Solan, Una, Seobagh in Kullu, Palampur in Kangra and Chail in Solan faced zero degrees each. Chamba at 0.9 degrees, Mandi one degrees, Hamirpur 1.6 degrees, Bilaspur and Kangra at 1.7 degrees.

Bhuntar in Kullu was low at two degrees, Nahan in Sirmaur 3.4 degrees and Dharamshala 4.2 degrees respectively.

Shimla Met Office forecasts mainly dry weather in next 24 hrs.

Met Office Director Mr Manmohan Singh said that Western disturbances becoming active from Dec 29 will cause light rain or snow likely to occur over higher reaches of state on new year's eve.

"In quick succession, the western disturbances may also cause light precipitation over HP from 1st to 3rd January 2019," he added. (UNI)
