J&J under the scanner

Johnson & Johnson the American medical services and pharmaceutical company has been in the news for a while now as its famous baby talcum powder has been alleged to have asbestos powder. The controversy has been raging over this even as the company CEO Alex Gorksy has firmly denied this.

The news is disturbing and upsets brand trust which has been built over the decades. Reuters has reported that the company’s stocks have tanked after news of this information has resurfaced. It is said that J&J knew that the company’s baby talcum powder was contaminated with asbestos which is carcinogenic which is alleged to have caused cancer in thousands of its customers.

In 2018 juries awarded two plaintiffs large amounts who blamed J&J’s talc for their Mesothelioma. 22 other plaintiffs have claimed that their ovarian cancer was because of the talc. This is a far more common and widespread ailment than Mesothelioma.

Taking cognizance of these reports, in India the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation and Food and Drug Administration have visited some J&J facilities and taken samples of the baby talc for testing.

The results are awaited.
