Chandigarh, Feb 4: As a result of concerted crackdown on criminals, a total of 7821 proclaimed offenders (POs) and bail jumpers fell in the Haryana police net last year.
Giving this information here on Tuesday, Director General of Police (DGP) Manoj Yadava said that during year 2019, police had nabbed 3423 POs and 4398 bail jumpers across the state. Among the arrested offenders, many of them were evading their arrest for a very long time.
He said that out of the total, State Crime Branch had captured 1577 POs and bail jumpers whereas 6244 were apprehended by various units of districts police including CIA and Special Staff.
In view of the parliamentary and Assembly elections in 2019, a special drive had also been undertaken to nab them, as these people could be used as muscle power in elections. "We have identified such offenders by gathering data from courts and other inputs to keep an effective tab on their movements and activities.
Our concerted and effective efforts have also ensured free, fair and incident-free elections in the state," he added. Detailing the other crackdowns, Mr Yadava said the police had also registered 2677 cases under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between January and December 2019. Over 16 quintals of drugs including opium, charas, poppy husk, smack, ganja and heroin worth crores of rupees was also seized from the arrested persons.
Haryana police is constantly making efforts to keep a tab on movements and activities of the criminals and anti-social elements, he said and added, "We will continue to speed up our operations against the POs, bail jumpers as well as other hardened criminals to further instilling a sense of security and safety among the people."
