Ambala, Jun 15 : Union State Minister Rattan Lal Kataria has said the Modi government is making all out efforts to revive the Vajpayee government project to link all the big rivers of the country for proper use of water throughout the year.
Stating this while addressing a public meeting organised at RD Farms Tepla on Friday to accord welcome to him after taking over as the Jal Shakti, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister at RD Farms Tepla, Mr Kataria said all the rivers would be linked so that the situation of floods in one part and famine in other parts could be avoided by making judicious use of the river waters.
He revealed that the government was seriously considering to launch ‘Nal se Jal’(water supply from pipeline) to ensure potable drinking water to the citizens in all corners of the country. He said the scheme would succeed if the water was stored in reservoirs.
Mr Kataria disclosed that there were 5206 big and small reservoirs in the country and there was need to increase the number of reservoirs to augment the capacity of storage of water. The construction of big and small reservoirs was needed to bring the water table above which had already gone down alarmingly.
The Union Minister said whereas some projects for purification of river Ganges and Yamuna were already in progress some new projects were added by increasing the number of projects for the purification of water through sewerage treatment plans. Where the capacity of treatment plant was small their capacity was being increased, he added.Earlier, Mr Kataria thanked the workers by sprinkling gulab petals present on the occasion to mark his gratitude to them during the Lok Sabha elections.
