Covid 19: Two more deaths, 92 new cases in Gujarat, total number crosses 1000 mark

Gandhinagar, Apr 17: Gujarat has reported two more deaths and 92 new cases of Novel Coronavirus infection in last 12 hours taking the tally in the western state to 1021, including 38 deaths and 74 recoveries so far.

There has been only one recovery across the state (in Ahmedabad) where now 24 of the total 33 districts have reported positive cases so far. A 55-year-old man in Ahmedabad and 31-year-old-youth in Vadodara have died. Both had the co-morbidity of hypertension. With 45 more new cases, Ahmedabad has a total of the maximum 590 reported positive cases, including the 18 deaths and 22 recoveries so far. All the new cases were locals. Of the remaining cases, 14 were in Surat, 9 in Vadodara, 8 in Bharuch, 5 in Narmada, 3 in Botad, 2 in Panchmahal and one each in Anand, Chhota Udepur, Dahod, Kheda, Patan and the new entrant district of Mahisagar. Of the 909 active cases 8 are on ventilators and remaining 901 are stable.

Principal Secretary Health, Ms Jayanti Ravi said so far, a total of 21,812 tests, including 1,608 in the last 24 hours, have been conducted. Notably, the first case of the Covid-19 infection in the state was detected on March 19 in Rajkot while the first death was reported on March 22 in Surat where 5 deaths have been reported so far. Ahmedabad has seen 18 deaths, Bhavnagar- 3, Vadodara- 6 and one each from Panchmahal, Patan, Jamnagar, Botad, Kutch and Gandhinagar. Among the deceased were 13 women and in all 15 senior citizens. Gandhinagar has now in all 17 cases (including 8 recoveries, one death), Vadodara 137 (7 recovered, 6 dead), Rajkot 28 ( 8 recoveries), Surat has 102 ( 5 dead, 10 recovered), Bhavnagar 26 (3 deaths, 10 recovered), Patan 15 (1 death, 4 recoveries), Bharuch 21 , Anand 26, Narmada 11, Panchmahal 8 (one death), Chhota Udepur, Banaskantha 6 each , Botad (one dead), Kutch (one dead) and Mahesana 4 each, Dahod, Kheda Porbandar ( all 3 recovered) 3 each, Gir Somnath (one recovered) 2 and one each in Morbi, Jamnagar (one death), Sabarkantha, Aravalli and Mahisagar districts.

As many as 15,914 people across the state are under the 14 day quarantine. Of the total positive cases, 33 had returned from abroad, 34 have travel history inside the country while the remaining 954 were locals without any out of station travel history. She said in the wake of the increasing number of cases a total of 28 clusters across the state including the maximum 14 of Ahmedabad city, 7 in Rajkot, 3 in Bhavnagar and 2 each in Surat and Vadodara have been put under complete lockdown for cluster quarantine.

Meanwhile, curfew has been imposed in parts of Ahmedabad city from till April 21 and parts of Surat city till April 22. These areas were the most affected ones. An MLA of main opposition Congress, Imran Khedawala was detected Covid-19 positive and washospitalised in Ahmedabad on April 14, hours after a meeting with CM Vijay Rupani who had also gone in to a seven days quarantine.
