New Delhi, Apr 24: Bilkis Yaoob Rasool Bano, a Gujarat riot victim, on Wednesday thanked everyone for standing by her side and said that she would use a part of her compensation money to help other women survivors of communal violence and educate their children.
Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered Gujarat government to pay Bilkis Bano Rs 50 lakhs as compensation, a government job and housing in the area of her choice. Bilkis Bano said, "I saw my daughter, Sahela, dying in front of my eyes. It was a horrible moment, which continuously haunts me as I couldn't even bury my child. "
The victim, who was pregnant at that time was brutally gang-raped by a riotous mob, which also killed seven members of her family and smashed her infant daughter against the wall in their house before her eyes at Randhikpur village near Ahmedabad on March 3, 2002.
"I hope that no one has to face what I and my family went through that day, " she said adding she wants to help women like her in the name of her first child, whose body was lost in a tide of hatred that swept Gujarat in 2002 riots. (UNI)
