Panaji, May 7: Goa Governor Satya Pal Malik has held telephonic conversation with Union Minister of Culture Prahlad Singh Patel and has also written to him seeking his intervention in the matter of 'negligence' of Archeological Survey of India (ASI) in the preservation, conservation and restoration of Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa .
According to a statement, the Governor, after receiving a copy of letter from Fr Patricio Fernandes, Rector of Basilica of Bom Jesus, called for a detailed report from ASI, Goa Circle. The Governor felt though the ASI report cited various constrains for the slow pace of work, it reflected uncoordinated action and noncommittal attitude of the different branches of ASI in dealing with preservation and restoration of the architectural marvel. As ASI functions under Ministry of Culture, the Governor sought the intervention of Patel and requested him to direct the ASI authorities to pull up their socks to complete all the restoration works in a time-bound manner and if possible, before the monsoon arrives in Goa.
The Governor has also invited Patel to visit the basilica once the lockdown ends. The Union Minister also said he would send some senior ASI officials to visit the basilica. (UNI)
