Panaji, Jul 10: In a major political development, 10 Congress MLAs, out of 15, have split from the party and are likely to merge with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tonight, a Congress MLA said.
Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes told mediapersons,''Ten Congress MLAs are splitting from the Congress and joining the BJP tonight."
The Congress group which has split from the party is led by Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar.
Meanwhile, Goa Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo said, ''We are going to meet Speaker now. Once we step out, we will formally announce what has happened.”
The ten Congress MLAs who are part of the rebel Congress group included Chandrakant Kavlekar, Isidore Fernandes, Francis Silveira, Filipe Neri Rodrigues, Jennifer and Atanasio Monserrate, Antonio Fernandes, Nilakanth Halarnkar, Clafacio Dias and Wilfred D’Sa.
If the rebel group is merged with the BJP, the strength of Congress in the state assembly will get reduced to five.
