Panaji, Apr 28 : The Central Election Committee of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday nominated Siddharth Kuncaliencar, former Panaji MLA and close aide of former Chief Minister Late Manohar Parrikar, as its candidate for Panaji by-election, dropping candidature of Parrikar's son Utpal Parrikar.
Few days back election committee of the state unit of the party had recommended names of Mr Kuncalienkar and Mr Parrikar to Central Election Committee of the state for the bypoll which has been necessitated due to demise of Manohar Parrikar.
Utpal, who had started taking interest in political activities and even taken part in election campaign for Lok Sabha and assembly seats, was being considered as front runner for the party ticket.
According to a party official, the decision could have been taken due to entry of former Rashtriya Sawayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Goa unit Chief Subhash Velingkar in the electoral fray and party did not want Utpal to face electoral stint in his debut.
Mr Kuncaliencar was elected as Panaji MLA twice- first when Parrikar was inducted into central cabinet as defence minister in 2014 and again in 2017 assembly elections. However, he resigned after Parrikar returned to state politics and became chief minister of the state in 2017. Panaji by-election is scheduled to be held on May 19, 2019.
