Parrikar’s son, Ex MLA in race for BJP ticket for Panaji bypoll

Panaji, Apr 24: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa on Wednesday shortlisted names of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's son Utpal Parrikar and former MLA Siddharth Kuncaliencar for the upcoming by-election to Panaji constituency scheduled to be held on May 19, 2019.

Speaking to reporters after attending a meeting of senior party leaders, Goa BJP President Vinay Tendulkar said,'' "Our party workers have submitted two names, that of Utpal Parrikar and Sidharth Kuncalienkar for the Panaji by-elections. We will forward them to our party's central election committee. We expect to finalise the candidate by tomorrow (Thursday) evening," Tendulkar said.

After death of Parrikar, his son has become active in politics, on the other Mr Kuncaliencar, who has been MLA from the constituency twice, has been close aide of Parrikar for almost a decade. When Parrikar joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet in 2014, Mr Kuncaliencar was chosen to constest assembly bypoll. He was elected MLA then and again was elected in 2017 assembly elections. However, he vacated the seat for Mr Parrikar who returned to state politics and allowed Parrikar to contest the seat again.

On the other hand Congress announced former Minister Atanasio 'Babus' Monserrate as its candidate, while Aam Adami Party (AAP) has already announced its leader Valmiki Naik as its candidate.
