Rahul Gandhi meets mining dependents, fishing community leaders in Goa

Panaji, Mar 9 : Congress President Rahul Gandhi met leaders of mining dependents, fishing community and activists fighting against coal pollution, among others, in the city on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Congress President, Goa Mining People's Front (GMPF) President Puti Goankar said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has assured us that sustainable mining will restart in Goa once the Congress comes to power." Mr Gaonkar said the front would work against those who had stopped employment of mining dependent people.

"Our stand is clear. We will work against those individuals who have stopped our employment during these upcoming elections," he said.

All Goa Fishing Union General Secretary Olencio Simoes said they submitted a memorandum to Mr Gandhi seeking withdrawal of the new norms for Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ), denotification of river nationalisation, among other things and the Congress President assured that he would look into each of the demands.

'We have also demanded for a separate fisheries ministry at the central level," Mr Simoes said. Gandhi arrived on a two-day visit to the coastal state on Friday evening and addressed meeting of booth members at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium at Taleigao near the city. (UNI)
