Two Goa Congress MLAs, Dayanand Sopte and Subhash Shirodkar, have resigned from the party and joined BJP.
Both the controversial MLAs are said to have met BJP president Amit Shah in Delhi before taking the decision. They reached Delhi past Monday midnight and had an early morning meeting with Shah. After taking a decision to shift loyalty, they soon faxed their resignation letters to the Assembly.
The move will be a big setback to the Congress that has been trying to topple Manohar Parrikar-led coalition government for the last many months. The Congress argument was that it should be invited to form the government because it was the single largest party with a strength of 16 MLAs in the 40-member assembly. Now, with two MLAs having left, the Congress strength was at par with BJP.
Sopte, who was once with the BJP, had joined the Congress ahead of last year’s Assembly election and defeated the then sitting Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar.
