Let’s Jam It!

Jams are easy to make at home when fruits are in season. Here are some delicious, mouth watering recipes to smear on a toast or drizzle over a pancake. Have fruit, jam it- is my simple advice. When making jam, a basic rule to follow is to use 1 cup of fruit and an equal measure of sugar.

1. Plum Jam

Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 mins

Let’s Jam It!
  • 1 kg ripe plums
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 kg sugar

Wash halve and de-stone the plums. In a saucepan put in the fruits and water and blanch. Next add the sugar and boil well. Cook till thick and jam is reddish brown. Place a drop on a plate; it should not be runny but of a firm consistency. Remove from flame and allow it to cool. Transfer into sterilised bottles and store in a cool dark place.

2. Apple Jam

Either red or green apples may be used in this recipe.

  • 2 kgs of apples
  • 2 kgs of sugar
  • 2 lemons for juice
  • 2 tsps cinnamon powder [optional]

Pare and core the washed apples. Cut them into thick slices. Place them on a tray and bake at 180 degrees for around 20 minutes or till the apples are well cooked. Alternately, place them in a saucepan and cook them in a glass of water. When it begins to boil, reduce the flame and continue to cook it with a lid on.[approx 10-12 minutes] Once the apple cooked, put in the sugar and stir well. The apple pieces will mash easily. Add the cinnamon powder and the lemon juice for flavouring. Allow the mixture to thicken to jam consistency.

If you have used the oven and baked the apples initially, now transfer them into a saucepan and cook with sugar. Follow the same procedure as above to make the jam.

Cool and store in air tight glass bottles.

3. Mixed Fruit Jam
