Joaquin Phoenix took home the Best Actor award at Oscars 2020 for his performance in 'Joker'. Rennee Zellweger was honoured with an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Joaquin Phoenix won the award for making the lead character in ‘Joker’ ever memorable. He has been one of the most talked about actors for the category. Despite the critical backlash against the film he won his first Academy Award and his fourth nomination. He is the second actor to be recognised by the academy for a role based on this comic-book character. In 2009, Heath Ledger posthumously won supporting actor for playing Joker in The Dark Knight. During the acceptance speech, Joaquin Phoenix recalled the song lyrics by his late brother River Phoenix.
This time, Rennee Zellweger picked for the award for the role as Judy Garland in biopic of the troubled musician. On the way to Oscar 2020, she faced competition from Saoirse Ronan in Little Women, Cynthia Erivo in Harriet, Charlize Theron in Bombshell and Scarlett Johansson in Marriage Story. The award was presented to her by last year's Oscar winner Rami Malik.
This is the second time Rennee Zellweger wins the Oscar for Best Actress. Zellweger was nominated for the best actress Oscar for Bridget Jones’s Diary and Chicago, and won a best supporting actress Oscar in 2004 for Cold Mountain.
Zellweger made an almost clean sweep of the major awards this season, winning best actress at the Baftas, Critics’ Choice and Screen Actors Guild awards, and the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama.
