Kolkata, Dec 31:Like every year, this year too Bengali film industry had its moments of light and darkness. But, unlike other years, this time several underrated films received a heavy word of mouth publicity.
Year 2019 started with Kaushik Ganguly's 'Bijoya' and ended with 'Robibaar' by Atanu Ghosh. This year many films got critical acclaim but the appreciation did not in the box office though the Bengali Film industry box-office reports are often alleged to be incorrect.
The films that reigned the box office are 'Nagarkirtan' and 'Jyesthoputro' by Kaushik Ganguly; 'Vinci Da' and 'Gumnaami' by Srijit Mukherji; 'Mukherjee Dar Bou' by Pritha Chakraborty, 'Kantho' and 'Gotro' by director duo Shiboprosad-Nandita, 'Ahaa Re' by Ranjan Ghosh, 'Professor Shonku O El Dorado' by Sandip Ray, 'Parineeta' by Raj Chakraborty, 'Sweater' by Shieladitya Maulik, 'Mitin Masi' by Arindam Sil and year's largest blockbuster 'Durgeshgorer Guptodhon' by Dhrubo Banerjee. There is a long list of films that drew critical appreciation, including: 'Bijoya' by Kaushik Ganguly, 'Mukhomukhi' by Kamaleswar Mukherjee, 'Tritiyo Odhyay' by Manoj Michigan, 'Kia and Cosmos' by Sudipto Roy followed by Srijit Mukherji's depiction of Shankar's 'Chowringhee'; 'Shah Jahan Regency'. National Award winning 'Tarikh' by Churni Ganguly, 'Kedara' by Indradip Dasgupta, 'Mahalaya' by Soumik Sen, 'Urojahaj' by Buddhadeb Dasgupta and last but not the least 'Ghawre Bairey Aaj' by Aparna Sen along with 'Nagarkirtan', 'Jyesthoputro', 'Vinci Da' and 'Gumnaami', 'Ahaa Re', 'Sweater', 'Mitin Masi' and 'Durgeshgorer Guptodhon' also grabbed critics' attention this year. The films that disappointed the critics and cinema goers alike include 'Basu Poribaar' by Suman Ghosh, 'Sagardwipe Jawker Dhan' by Sayantan Ghoshal, Pradipta Bhattacharya's 'Rajlokkhi o Srikanto', 'Bibaho Obhijaan' by Birsa Dasgupta, 'Goyenda Junior' and 'Barnoporichay' by Mainak Bhaumik. Though the box office of 'Barnoporichay' and 'Bibaho Obhijaan' were decent. Dev starrer 'Password' by Kamaleshwar Mukherjee and 'Kidnap' by Raja Chanda and finally 'Robibaar' by Atanu Ghosh also failed to live up the expectations somehow.
Among the male actors, the year belonged to Ritwick Chakraborty and Prosenjit Chatterjee for achieving the biggest hits in their badges. Riddhi Sen, Jishuu Sengupta, Rudranil Ghosh and Anirban Bhattacharya also had a decent year. Rituparna Sengupta, Koel Mallick and Jaya Ahsan maintained a dream run while Ishaa Saha and Tuhina Das remained the black stallion among the female actors. Director Kaushik Ganguly swept the chart of leading Benagli movies with three acclaimed films this year. (UNI)
