India’s elegant beauty Aishwarya Rai continues to enthral admirers with her acting, beauty and elegance. November 19, 1994 was the golden day on which she won the Miss World title and charmed her way into the heart of every Indian. Twenty five years later, the day is recalled even after many Indian girls have also earned the title after her, the latest being Manushi Chillar. Aishwarya also won the Miss Photogenic title at the same contest.
She won the title in the beauty pageant which had 87 contestants from across the world. The 21 year old architecture student impressed not just with her beauty but with her intelligent answers. This proved a turning point in her career as she left her studies and took to modelling and subsequently acting. Her first movie was in Tamil, Iruvar, a Mani Ratnam film which was a super hit. She has since acted in many Hindi and Tamil movies and endeared herself to audiences. She has acted in Hollywood movies too.
The actor was awarded the fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri in 2009 in honour of her contribution to Indian cinema.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is the first Indian woman actor to have her wax statue at Madame Tussauds, Times Square, New York.
Few people know that Netherlands has honoured Aishwarya by naming a Tulip after her in 2005.
Aishwarya is also the first Indian actor to be a member of the Cannes film festival jury in 2005.
