Dhanush-Manju Warrier starrer ‘Asuran’ which runs successfully in packed theatres right now has got a release in Amazon Prime too.
The Vetrimaaran film ‘Asuran’ is based on the Tamil novel ‘Vekkai’ by Poomani has been released on OTT platform Amazon Prime. It follows the story of a Dalit farmer’s family on the run.
The film which was released on October 4, which crossed Rs 100 crore in box office collections, is still running in popular theatres of Tamil Nadu such as as Sathyam Cinemas, Luxe Cinemas and Rohini Silver Screens etc.
Though, Vijay’s Bigil and Karthi’s Kaithi occupied most of the screens, Asuran managed to run successfully in theatres and attracts crowd. Asuran is the story of farmer Sivasami (played by Dhanush) and his fight to save his land from the most affluent families in the village. Asuran hit the headlines for a political controversy in which PMK and AIADMK accused DMK of land grab charges. PMK founder S Ramadoss accused DMK of encroaching land assigned for the Dalits during the British era. Panchami lands are lands assigned by the British to Dalits in 1892 and these could neither be sold nor re-classified. In the movie, the hero is making a valiant fight to protect his land from a villain of the dominant caste trying to appropriate it.
Malayalam star Manju Warrier made a dream debut in Tamil as Pachaiyamma in Asuran. All the reviews have showered praises for Manju for her excellent histrionics as Pachaiyamma. “So good to see her in such a powerful character and movie. Perfect entry to the Kollywood,” one review said.
Asuran soon declared as a box-office hit and received wide acclaim for its portrayal of caste violence and narrating the story from the point of view of a Dalit hero. In the film, a young boy kills a dominant caste man who murders a member of his family. Dhanush plays the boy’s father.
Asuran was produced by Kalaippuli S Thanu and had music by GV Prakash. The film has become Dhanush’s top grosser in the state. A new trend has been set in the Tamil industry where several new releases have found their way to OTT platforms of Amazon Prime within weeks of their release.
