Thanneer Mathan Dinangal: well-crafted coming of age movie

Movie Review

Thanneer Mathan Dinangal is a coming-of-age story of a teenage school boy who becomes a man as he deals with tough situations, a love affair and strained school atmosphere. This feel-good movie peppered with humour is out and out a well-crafted teenage movie which is full of one-liners and tit-for-tats of teen life. This rom-com features Vineeth Sreenivasan, Mathew Thomas and Anaswara Rajan in the lead roles and is currently running to packed theatres.

This is a debut movie for the director Girish AD, who is well-known as a YouTube short filmmaker. The script was done by Girish AD and Dinoy Paulose, who deserves a hi-five for capturing the teenage mind through punch dialogues.

The story of the movie revolves around Jaison (Mathew Thomas), a higher secondary student, who falls in love with his classmate, Keerthi. He is annoyed with Keerthi's admiration for their new Malayalam teacher Ravi Padmanabhan aka Ravi sir (Vineeth Sreenivasan). The arrival of an exuberant new teacher Ravi Padmanabhan creates friction in the mind of Jaison. Despite all the odds, how finally Jaison wins Keerthy's love becomes the crux of the story.

The incidents which happen in a higher secondary school are narrated beautifully, without the overdose of drama. All the characters are neatly written and introduced wonderfully. The songs are well-placed. Even though the narrative looked a little stretched in the second half, all those little shortcomings were compensated by the well-crafted climax.

Natural acting of Mathew Thomas, the Kumbalangi Nights fame actor who plays Jaison, needs special mention. The actor steals the show with his matured acting skills and charming screen presence. Vineeth Sreenivasan, who appears as Ravi Sir, has portrayed his character convincingly as per the story flow.

Anaswara Rajan, the Udaharanam Sujatha fame actress who plays the role of Keerthi, is instantly likable. Her combination scenes with Mathew Thomas are a treat to watch. The rest of the star cast, including Shabareesh Varma, Nisha Sarang, Irshad, Sri Ranjini, etc. are all good in their respective roles. The excellent cinematography by Jomon T John and Vinod Illampilly has made Thanneer Mathan Dinangal a complete visual treat This film is jointly produced by cinematographer Jomon T John, Shebin Backer, and editor Shameer Muhammed.

The songs, especially the song ‘Jathica thottam…’, which are composed by Justin Varghese has already emerged as the chartbuster of the season. The excellent background score has added the perfect mood to the full-filled entertainer.

Thanneer Mathan Dinangal will thoroughly entertain the audience who still cherish their school days.
