The lead pair of Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan shine throughout the period drama, Kalank directed by Abhshek Varman. This Hindi movie has an interesting star cast that includes Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha. The just released movie is long, two hours and forty minutes and moves at a very slow pace which may be pointed out as its major flaw.
The movie is set in pre Independence days, to be precise in 1945. Alia plays Roop and Varun is Zafar. The story is in Husainabad, Lahore during British rule. Amidst the rising communal tensions Roop a married Hindu girl falls in love with Zafar a Muslim blacksmith. Zafar is an illegitimate child and somehow the two are connected. Will their love blossom is the main stay of the movie. The many twists and turns of their love story are predictable.
Alia has again proved her acting prowess as the frail Roop and Varun who puts in his best effort with his finely chiseled body, carry the movie on their shoulders in spite of so many other big names. Madhuri is disappointing. The other characters in the movie have not been well drawn out by the director. Altogether an average movie.
