After Rahul Gandhi gave the example of Bollywood while discussing ‘Dynasty Politics’ in his Berkeley speech, attention has turned towards this phenomenon in all spheres. Stung by Rahul’s reference Rishi Kapoor was quick to react on Twitter and said that you have to earn people’s respect via merit. Like it or not ‘dynasty’ is a reality in Bollywood as it is in politics. Many of the younger stars like Sara Ali Khan are frank and unashamed to admit that they have had a headstart compared to other newcomers.
The Kapoors, Bachchans and the Khans rule Bollywood and continue their dynasty rule. The Kapoors are often referred to as the ‘First family of Bollywood’ or the ‘Moghuls of Hindi cinema’. Since the days of Prithviraj Kapoor through his sons-Raj , Shammi and Shashi, their children and now grandchildren, the dynasty lives on. Rishi’s son Ranbir, Randhir Kapoor’s children Karisma and Kareena are all current gen popular stars.
Then there is the other Kapoor powerful hub with Boney Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. Boney and late wife actor Sridevi have both daughters treading their mother’s path. Jhanvi is already getting noticed for her style statements and debut while Khushi is being groomed in full throttle. None less than Karan Johar has taken them beneath his wings and is keen to launch them successfully.
Anil Kapoor continues with his strong screen presence while all three of his siblings are in the film industry. Rhea produces films and runs her own fashion line; Sonam is a successful and stylish actor; Harshvardhan is also an actor.
The Bachchans are all on the silver screen- be it the Big B or his talented wife Jaya Bahaduri, his son Abhishek or his gorgeous wife Aiswarya Rai. The Bachchan presence is strong and powerful in the world of Hindi cinema, whatever they do makes headlines.
When we look at the Khans, Salman rules. His support for his two brothers Arbaaz and Sohail is well known. Saif Ali Khan followed his mother Sharmila Tagore into tinsel world and so did his sister Soha Ali Khan.
Aamir Khan popular for his stylish performances is the son of yesteryear producer Tahir Hussain and nephew of famed Nasir Hussain. Aamir has kept the dynasty alive by launching his nephew Imran Khan into movies.
Dharmendra the popular actor has both his sons in movies. Both Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol have been successful actors. Now Sunny’s son is being launched.
There are plenty more examples; Sonakshi Sinha the daughter of Shatrughan Sinha; late Vinod Khanna’s sons Rahul and Akshaye are both actors; Tiger Shroff is Jackie Shroff’s son; Suniel Shetty’s son Aahan and daughter Athiya; Vivek Oberoi is the son of Suresh Oberoi; Shahid Kapoor is the son of Pankaj Kapur though they may spell their names differently; Hrithik Roshan is the son of Rakesh Roshan actor turned director; Shraddha Kapoor is the daughter of Shakti Kapoor; Shruti and Akshara Haasan are both daughters of Kamala Haasan; Ratna Pathak is daughter of Dina Pathak; Sooraj Pancholi is son of Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab; Konkona Sen is daughter of Aparna Sen and so the list goes on and on.
This kind of dynastic pattern extends to all aspects of cinema making, be it directors, producers, musicians, editors, singers, etc. We know that Karan Johar is the son of filmmaker Yash Johar. Music wizard AR Rahman is the son of RK Shekhar a Malayalam music composer. Rahman was seen recently with his daughter Khatija on stage. Is a launch in movies in the offing, we wonder?
Now, more than ever before siblings and offsprings of actors are foraying into Bollywood. There seems to be no doubt that the ‘dynast’ accusation of Kangana Ranaut rules roost. Many new faces are being launched this year by virtue of their Bollywood connections. Here are a few notable ones.
Ahan Shetty son of Suneil Shetty is all set to enter tinsel world. He is soon to be cast by Sajid Nadiawala in his next movie venture in Telugu it has been reported.
Karan Deol son of Sunny Deol is debuting in Pal Pal Dil Ke Pas which is due to be released in mid 2019. The interesting fact is that the film is being directed by his father Sunny Deol and produced by his grandfather Dharmendra!
Fashionista Ananya Pandey has chosen to follow in her eminent father Chunkey Pandey’s footsteps. She is soon to be seen in the second part of Karan Johar’s Student of the Year opposite Tiger Shroff. The movie is expected to be out in May 2019. Pranutan Bahl, the name says it all. She is yesteryear popular star Nutan’s granddaughter and daughter of actor Mohnish Bahl. This elegant looking actor will be seen in Notebook opposite Zaheer Iqbal.
Shanaya Kapoor is the newest of the Kapoors to join filmdom. She is the daughter of Sanjay Kapoor and Maheep. Rumour has it that she is to be seen in a Dharma production movie very soon.
Not to be forgotten is Isabelle Kaif- not an offspring but Katrina Kaif’s sibling who is to enter Bollywood this year. With Salman Khan’s solid backing and sister Katrina’s mentoring Isabelle is one to look out for. She is to make her Bollywood debut opposite Sooraj Pancholi in Time to Dance. Isabelle had earlier acted in a Canadian movie.
The saga continues, family connections help you thrive in this highly demanding and competitive screen world.
