Speculation of Malayalam's superstar Mohanlal entering the Lok Sabha electoral fray as a BJP candidate has seen his fans vehemently oppose any such move.
Mohanlal fans association leader Vimal Kumar went public with his opposition during a debate on a regional TV channel. Mohanlal was, according to him, a national asset, a superstar loved by all and could not be snatched away by any political party.
Any move by the superstar to join the election fray would result in violent protests, he warned.
Vimal Kumar went on to argue that in Kerala no filmstar could shine on the political scene and said that both Mukesh and Innocent failed as legislator and parliamentarian in taking care of their constituencies. The only exception was Suresh Gopi, he added.
Social media has been abuzz since Mohanlal was conferred Padma Bhushan. A section even alleging that it was due to his proximity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi who he had also met, setting the mood for the speculation.
BJP leaders in Kerala had gone on record that Mohanlal was welcome to be a candidate and all support would be given. But it was for him to come forward, they added. However, the superstar has so far not reacted, though giving hints that he would not be in the electoral race.
Giving a political twist to the Padma award, some commented that Mammootty too deserved this honour, but he was not considered for it because of the pro-Left stand that he has taken. He is chairman of the CPM-controlled Kairali TV channel.
