The blockbuster movie from the Marvel Comics World , Black Panther has broken numerous records amongst the Marvel Franchise and also in the World Record Box Offices. But seemingly its records run is not over yet as it has made a big impact amongst the Academy Awards too.
The film which earned $ 1.3 billion worldwide has made its strong presence known at different awards with multiple nominations at Billboard Music Award, British Academy Film Awards, Critics' Choice Movie Awards, Golden Globe Awards, People's Choice Awards , Saturn Awards , Screen Actors Guild Awards and Teen Choice Awards.
Though in the past superhero movies have received nods from the Academy it has always been for the technical categories. But for Black Panther to garner nomination for Best Picture at the Oscars was considered doubtful since the Academy has been notoriously famous for not even considering any movie from the comic world for the same.
But Disney and Marvel together had made a strong effort this year to create a nomination campaign for Black Panther. After hiring Academy Award campaign strategist Cynthia Swartz, the campaign was primarily focused on highlighting the creative and technological superiority but also the global impact it made by representing the colored people who have been long under represented. The campaign appears to have been very successful with the film garnering 7 Oscar nominations when the announcements were made on January 22 , 2019.
The nominations were for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Original Song (for "All the Stars"), Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and also for the elusive Best Picture Award.
Now all it remains to be seen is if the success of the campaigns in the academy nominations also translate to the awards and if on 24th February 2019, Black Panther will become the 1st superhero movie ever to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
