Noted Malayalam filmmaker Thampi Kannanthanam dies

Kochi, Oct 02: Senior Malayalam filmmaker Thampi Kannanthanam passed away on Tuesday. He was 64.

He was under treatment in a private hospital in Kochi following various ailments. His health condition worsened on Tuesday morning and eventually breathed his last on Tuesday evening in the hospital.

Super-hit movie ‘Rajavinte Makan’ starring Mohanlal was the magnum opus of Kannanthanam. His career graph as a director peaked in the industry after the movie. ‘Rajavinte Makan’ also gifted ‘superstardom’ to the actor Mohanlal. His work includes Bhoomiyile Rajakkanmar, Vazhiyorakazchakal, Nadody, Chukkan, Manthrikam, and Thavalam, to name a few. In most of his films Thampi Kannanthanam worked along with Mohanlal. He acted in Itha Oru Theeram, Kathirunna Divasam, Nirnayam, Ustaad and Oru Cheru Punchiri among others. His association with Mohanlal was fruitful and ended in successfully churning out several blockbusters together.

Kannanthanam is survived by his wife Kunjumol, daughters Aiswarya and Angel.

He began his career as an associate director to Sasikumar. He also tried his luck in Hindi through ‘Hadd’ starring Jackie Shroff and Ayesha Jhulka, but it turned to a damp squib in the box office. His last Malayalam movie ‘Freedom’, in which he introduced himself as a script writer, was released in 2004. He also donned the role of a producer by making movies such as Maanthrikam, Indrajaalam, etc.For the last once decade he was away from the Malayalam movie industry.
