SC quashes charge against ‘winking girl’ Priya Varrier

The Supreme Court on Friday has quashed the charges against the actress Priya Prakash Varrier who shot to fame with her wink in a song from a Malayalam film ‘Oru Adar Love’.

The Supreme Court found on Friday that the blasphemy charge against Priya Prakash Varrier is wrong. The verdict of the Supreme Court was based on the plea filed by the actress herself seeking to quash FIRs filed against her in various courts in India.

The major accusation against the star was that her wink featured in the song is blasphemous. A group of Muslim youth from Hyderabad had filed a complaint at the Falaknuma Police Station against the actress and the makers of the song, for allegedly hurting their sentiments. The Muslim youth had claimed that the song 'Manikya Malaraya Poovi', when translated into English, insults the Prophet.

But Priya argued that the song in which the wink featured was written 40 years ago and it has been sung by Muslim community all along without any protest.
