India offers ‘Ayush scholarship’ to Lankan students in traditional medicines

Colombo, Apr 11: The High Commission of India Colombo on Wednesday announced scholarships to Sri Lankan nationals under the Ayush Scholarship Scheme for undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses in Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy for the academic year 2019-20.

The government of India selects meritorious Sri Lankan nationals for award of these scholarships in consultation with the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Sri Lanka. Ayush scholarship scheme is handled by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and Ayush Department of the Ministry of Health and Family Planning, Colombo page reported.

These scholarships cover full tuition fees and a monthly sustenance allowance for the entire duration of the course. The scholarship also covers accommodation allowance and an annual grant. Besides, all ICCR scholars in India are provided full healthcare facilities. The Ayush scholarship scheme is meant for BIMSTEC and Non-BIMSTEC member countries.

The scheme provides 50 scholarships to pursue courses in Indian traditional medical system such as Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy.

The BIMSTEC countries covered are Thailand, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Myanmar and the other countries are covered under the Scheme for non-BIMSTEC. Besides that, 20 slots annually are also offered to Malaysia under this Scheme. (UNI)
