Puducherry, Sep 28: In the backdrop of the demand for more under graduate seats for degree courses in colleges, Puducherry government has secured the approval for an additional 130 seats in Tagore Government Arts and Science College from Pondicherry University, for admissions in the current year (2018-2019).
Announcing this at a press conference on Friday, R Kamalakannan, Minister of Education said that the seats were inadequate for admission, leading to agitations. Following the agitation, he held discussions with the Chief Minister, V Narayanasamy and secured the approval of Lt Governor.
As per the approval granted by the university, 20 seats have been enhanced in each of the subjects of Economics, History, Philosophy, French and Psychology, while 10 seats have been enhanced in Tamil, Sociology and BBA in Tourism. A total of 120 seats have been enhanced in Economics, while in the remaining seven subjects, to 60 in each discipline.
Kamalakkanan said that around 150 guest lecturers would be appointed for meeting the requirement of the faculty for a proper conduct of the courses . However in Karaikal region, there were vacant seats available for admission as all seats have not been filled up. In the context of the enhancement of seats, the admission process through online counseling, which was to be concluded on September 30 has been extended to October 5, said the minister.(UNI)
