Mumbai, Nov 26 : The BSE Sensex on Tuesday fell by 67.93 points to settle at 40,821.30 on profit booking by local operators at higher level.
The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) declined by 36.05 points to 12,037.70. The market remained volatile today.
Registering an all time high at 40,889.23 on Monday, the BSE Sensex opened on a strong note at 41,022.85, up by 133 points. During the day it surged by 231 points to 41,120.28 day high.
In late trade, it slipped nearly by 179 points to 40,710.20 days low before closing at 40,821.30, down by 67.93 points from its last close.
The Nifty recorded day high and low at 12,132.45 and 12,006.35 points respectively.
The sectoral indices include, Materials, Consumer Durable, Auto, Telecom, Metal and Power drifted lower during the day. In scrips, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors DVR, Powergrid and M & M drifted lower.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.79 per cent while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index fell 0.38 per cent.
The market breadth was tilted in favour sellers. On the BSE, 1124 shares rose and 1410 shares fell. A total of 173 shares were unchanged. In Nifty 50 index, 18 stocks advanced while 32 stocks declined.
Overseas, most European shares were trading lower while Asian stocks ended mixed on Tuesday afternoon following record finishes overnight on Wall Street. On the US-China trade front, leading negotiators from Washington and Beijing held another phone call on Tuesday morning to discuss 'core issues...China's Ministry of Commerce said in an online statement.
