Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has mooted privatisation of Indian Railways.
In her maiden Budget speech on Friday, she said that the development of the country's railway infrastructure called for an investment of around Rs 50 lakh crore between now and 2030.
This would be an annual expenditure of Rs 1.4-1.6 lakh crore. This would also mean that it would take a few decades to complete the projects proposed. But in between there would also be new and modern projects that would have to be considered.
In such a situation, it was, therefore, necessary to look at privatisation to keep things move on track, she said in her address.
