Biraj, who had killed his wife by pouring petrol and burning her has been caught and arrested by the police in Mumbai on Wednesday. He had been absconding since Sunday.
Jithu, 29, had married Biraj, 36, a welder two years ago. He worked in the Gulf and she as a Muncipality auditor. They had no children. Owing to family problems they had filed for divorce and Jithu was living with her family for the past few months. Jithu was with her father when the ghastly incident occurred. Onlookers and Jithu’s father, Janardhanan, saw Biraj throw petrol on Jithu and burn her. In the shock of the moment as attention was on the burning Jithu, Biraj escaped from there unnoticed. Biraj is said to have come to the crime spot with three bottles of petrol which he carried in a laptop bag.
The girl who suffered burns of 80% was rushed to hospital but succumbed to her injuries later. Her body was brought home and the cremation conducted on Wednesday. People thronged to her home to pay their last respects and there was an air of shock, anger and despondency at her death.
There was great outrage amongst the people at Puthukad, Thrissur, where Jithu belonged. The dastardly act had come as a shock to all and they were keen that the offender be caught and punished quickly. The police did not fail them. Biraj has been tracked down and arrested.
Jithu is survived by her parents and younger sister.
