Subhas Barala, father of alleged stalker Vikas, is a man of honour sworn to protect the honour of daughters in particular. He not only wears his commitment on his sleeves but has announced through a fairly big sign board on the gate of his bungalow. State President of Haryana BJP and a law maker in the state seems to have spoken on the subject on numerous occasions repeatedly announcing his commitment to betis and ardent support to Narendra Modi’s lofty ideals and policies.
His commitment to Betis was clearly visible and heard even when his son Subhas, a law student who must be aware of the clauses of Criminal Procedure Code, was involved in a stalking and alleged abduction of a girl Varnika Kundu, though he took few days to come out. Barala told reporters on Wednesday that Varnika was like his daughter and rubbished charges of opposition parties that police were under political pressure. He had no doubt that his son was cooperating with police investigations right from the beginning. “Today my son was away from home and was unaware of the notice sent by police for joining the investigations. As soon as it came into my knowledge about the notice pasted at my Chandigarh residence I immediately asked Vikas to join investigations. “On beti Varnika, we respect law. Vikas will cooperate fully with the police” he added. Well, it took days for the father and son, a law maker and law student, to react and respond on the alleged crime. What unflinching commitment to Beti Bachao, Beti Padao.
Soon after the details of the stalking and abduction charges hit the headlines Barala also tried to contact the victim’s father, an IAS officer. But he did not pick up the phone. Obviously many believe it was for a compromise and settlement outside purview of the criminal procedure code. What a concern for a senior leader committed BetiBachao, BetiPadao.
But now reports are coming for a man committed to Modiji’s policies and ideals, Barala had face dembarassment with a close relative, Vikram Barala, 25, accused of kidnapping a minor girl from a Haryana village. On Wednesday, Punjab and Haryana court said that it would hear the case against him at the end of August. Vikram also has a case of assault against him. On May 7 Vikram with his cousin Kuldeep Barala and friends had allegedly kidnapped a 16 year old girl from Badhai Khera Village in Fatehbad. She was rescued by the police, but the locals had to block the Hissar-Chandigarh highway demanding actionfor the rule of law to prevail. Why the delay? The police explanation is that the girl had made no mention of kidnapping in her statement before the local magistrate. Did we not hear the same reaction from the law enforcing agencies in the Chandigarh case too? But the lawyer of the minor girl says that the accused had browbeaten into keeping silent about kidnapping. In Chandigarh case also the victim’s family has informed that she can give a fresh statement, if necessary. The details of the Chandigarh case have already been reported widely to narrate further. What commitment to Beti Bachao, Beti Padao.
But the learned and honourable chief minister of Haryana has made it clear that the father cannot be punished for son’s crime. It can be re-phrased that a leader cannot be punished for the crimes of his close family members. What a magnanimous chief minister? But then what happens Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and dream. Has the governance change made any difference?
